SPIN-CHIP
Launched in June 2026, SPIN-CHIP is a project selected under the European Union’s CHIPS JU programme and coordinated by Thales. Its objective is to demonstrate the potential of magnetic tunnel junctions in the next generation of “made in EU” chips — more efficient, more sensitive, faster.

TECHNICAL PILLARS
Memory: SPIN-CHIP is developing a high-density magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) specifically designed to withstand radiation. Primarily intended for space applications, this technology leverages MTJs as non-volatile storage solutions, combining performance and robustness in extreme environments.
Computing: The project explores the creation of stochastic magnetic tunnel junctions, paving the way for new computing architectures. Stochastic neural accelerators, probabilistic Ising machines, these innovations directly target improved energy efficiency for embedded artificial intelligence, a key challenge for edge computing deployments.
Sensing: SPIN-CHIP is also refining ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors for precision biomedical applications. Cardiac activity monitoring is among the priority use cases, illustrating how spintronics can transform the medical devices of tomorrow.
RF Signal Processin : Finally, the project explores multifunctional magnetic tunnel junctions for radiofrequency signal processing, with applications in secure communications, a strategic area for defence and critical infrastructures.
THREE STRATEGIC SECTORS
The first use cases identified by the consortium cover markets with high societal and industrial stakes: health, space and security. Dedicated performance indicators measure the real-world impact of developments.
FUNDING
SPIN-CHIP represents a total investment of €23.8M, co-funded by the European Commission (35%), BPI through the IDEMO Europe programme (55%), and a co-funding contribution from the SPIN Research Programme for French partners.
