MASKY, a project selected under the 2024 Call for Projects of PEPR DIADEM

The project MASKY (Advanced Materials for Skyrmion-based Spintronics), led by researchers from the PEPR SPIN community, has been selected as one of the laureates of the 2024 Call for Projects launched by PEPR DIADEM on materials.

Skyrmions, tiny magnetic structures with unique properties, are attracting growing interest as building blocks for next-generation spintronic components, designed to overcome the limitations of conventional electronics. They hold great promise for future logic and magnetic memory technologies while offering significantly lower energy consumption. The MASKY project aims to identify and engineer ultrathin multilayer materials capable of stabilizing skyrmions under optimal conditions in terms of size, robustness, and dynamic behavior.
To accelerate this search, MASKY combines predictive artificial intelligence with large-scale data exploration. This approach will be fueled by the fabrication of gradient samples with varying compositions and thicknesses, as well as their high-throughput characterization. The predictive AI models thus developed will then be validated through device prototyping, creating a continuous feedback and improvement loop.
A key focus of the project lies in investigating the magnetostrictive properties of multilayers deposited on piezoelectric substrates. The goal is to design skyrmions highly sensitive to surface acoustic waves, thereby exploring the emerging frontier between skyrmionics and straintronics.
Organized into five work packages – metric definition (WP0), growth of complex gradient films (WP1), high-speed characterization (WP2), predictive AI implementation (WP3), and device prototyping (WP4) – MASKY brings together complementary expertise and leverages the experimental and data platforms developed within DIADEM. This innovative approach could reshape the way spintronics discovers new materials and, in the long term, be adapted to other emerging technologies.
MASKY builds on strong strategic partnerships, in close collaboration with PEPR DIADEM and PEPR SPIN, and is supported by the EQUIPEX+ Ediaman initiative.
